Do You Have Unclaimed Money

 

Did you know you may have unclaimed cash (also referred to as unclaimed property) just waiting for you to claim it?  These unclaimed funds can be anything from forgotten checking or savings accounts, undeliverable tax refunds or leftover credits from mortgage payoffs. 

 

Be wary of companies that want to charge you to “help” you claim this money.  All the information you need is on the internet.  To help you out we have listed each state’s website for unclaimed property at the bottom of this article.  To locate unclaimed money that might be yours just select your state's Unclaimed Property Division and then do a search for your name.  There is NO charge for this and you should not sign up to any Web sites that ask you to pay a fee! 

 

Great Tip

Make sure you check every state you have ever lived in.  Most people locate money in states they lived in previously.  You may even find money in other states if a previous employer reported your income in a different state rather than the one you live in.  Also check maiden names or a name from a previous marriage.  If you find one in a different name you will simply have to show documents to prove the name change (marriage license).

 

If you do find missing money, consider paying off some debt rather than spending it frivolously.  You can also open a savings account for yourself or your child with this money so that you can have it for emergencies or college.
